Door knockers have long been used to represent hospitality, good fortune, and even to ward off evil spirits. According to a 1917 history of doorknockers, they've been in continuous use since ancient times, with brief exceptions in the 17th and 19th centuries, and were most intricately designed during the Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance eras. Initially made of iron, they later transitioned to bronze, and finally brass, which remains the preferred material.
